Is this your family? It shouldn't be.

Updated: Nov 24

In today’s world, politics is everywhere—on our screens, in our conversations, and even in our homes. It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of ideologies and opinions that often divide us, but at the end of the day, family should always come first. No political party or belief system should ever overshadow the relationships that are built on love, trust, and shared history.

We’ve seen families torn apart by political differences, where heated debates replace laughter around the dinner table, and deep-seated arguments replace the bonds that were once so strong. It’s heartbreaking to witness how something that is meant to be a source of connection—our view of the world—can become a wedge that drives us further apart from the people who matter most.

What we often forget is that family is where we find unconditional love and support. No matter how divisive politics may seem, family should remain a sanctuary of understanding, acceptance and protection. We don’t always have to agree, but we should always strive to listen, respect, defend and love one another. After all, family is what will be there for us when everything else fades away.

If we allow politics to dictate our relationships, we risk losing what truly matters—the people who have been with us through every chapter of our lives. So, let’s choose empathy over division, respect over rivalry, and love over ideology. It’s time to put family first—because, in the end, family is what lasts. It's that simple. It really is.

Darryl and Jane Glenn's blended and extended family is just like yours. We are mixed race and ethnicity and we cover the spectrum of political, philosophical and ideological beliefs. Collectively we've made good decisions and bad ones and successfully navigated the consequences of them all. And we've changed our minds on things. But most importantly, we are committed to our family and we strive to practice love, patience, humility and forgiveness daily. So, we can think of no better topic than family and politics during the holidays to kick off our Bridging The Gap Workshops, an alternative to mediation and coaching. Learn More
